World Record Swim

Every now and then, we are asked to undertake surveys of an interesting nature.

On 09 August 2014, Lauren Boyle, who was taking part in the Wellington Winter Championships, broke the 1500m freestyle world record at the short course championship. Her time of 15:22.68 was more than four seconds under the previous record but is subject to ratification by the world body FINA.

The world record claim needs to be supported with a certificate from a licensed cadastral surveyor confirming the pool length meets the FINA requirements for lane length.

A call was received from the organisers on Saturday evening asking for a surveyor to urgently go to the wellington Regional Aquatic Centre in Kilbirnie to undertake the necessary measurements. Spencer Holmes surveyor Hudson Moody answered the call. The pool duly was measured and subsequently certified as meeting the official length requirements.
