Ian Leary

IanIan is a professional town planner who has been involved in land management and development for over 20 years. He has been with Spencer Holmes for over 18 years and is a director of the company. Previously he worked in land development overseas and with the planning department of Wellington City Council.

Ian has a broad range of planning experience, having had a leading role in numerous large projects including large commercial and retail buildings, multi-unit residential developments, landfills, utilities, recreational facilities, commercial and residential subdivisions.

Projects he has worked on include the office towers Maritime Towers and One Featherston St in Central Wellington, the rezoning and mass earthworks approval at Takapu Island and the rural subdivision of Kinnoul Station on Wellington’s south coast.

As well as being involved in project based work, Ian has prepared private plan change proposals and prepared submissions on changes to legislation, planning policy documents, resource consents and plan changes.

Ian has a substantial amount of experience in Council hearings and presenting planning evidence in the Environment Court on numerous occasions.

His background in surveying includes construction setout and monitoring, roading and servicing design. This together with his territorial authority experience, gives him an excellent practical understanding of development work and an ability to practically apply planning rules and legislation.

Ian is married with two children. He is a keen cricket fan and rugby league fanatic. He has a high level of involvement with both sports including coaching at a high level.
