Muldoon's Corner Easing Project

The completed $16.5 million upgrade improved safety by easing a number of tight curves, including Muldoon’s Corner, improved visibility, and provided better protection from the drop into the valley. Following the removal of a number of tight bends, large trucks that travel over the hill can now safely pass each other when travelling in opposite directions on this upgraded 1km section of highway. Muldoon’s Corner was always particularly difficult to negotiate.
Spencer Holmes Ltd were the site surveyors for Hawkins Construction Ltd who were main contractor for the New Zealand Transport Agency’s Muldoon’s Corner Easing Project. The project involved the easing of a number of tight curves, including Muldoon's Corner, about 500m south of the Rimutaka Summit.

The project took around three years to complete.
